Arthur P. Maki

August 7, 1929 — January 9, 2018

Arthur P. Maki, 88, of Jaffrey, NH, died peacefully at the Monadnock Community Hospital on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 after a period of failing health.

Arthur was born in Troy, NH on August 7, 1929 son of the late Sulo and Lillian (Pelton) Maki. He graduated with the class of 1947 from the Troy High School and had attended trade school in Connecticut before serving from 1951 to 1953 in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

In 1954, Arthur married Eleanor Hautanen and together they made their home in Jaffrey for the past 63 years.

Arthur had worked as a carpenter for more than 32 years, having worked at the MacMillan Company, Hancock Homes and for David Smith locally before retiring in 1986.

He enjoyed travelling, especially on bus tours with his wife. He especially enjoyed tours on the Mississippi Queen River Boat, Branson MO and Dollywood. He and Eleanor also travelled to the Scandinavian countries of Finland and Sweden, and always liked visiting family and friends along the East Coast.

In quiet times at home, Arthur liked hunting, making puzzles and picking berries, apples and peaches whenever they were in season. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren simply listening to the stories of their daily adventures and accomplishments.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Maki was preceded in death by his son Philip J. Maki on May 19, 1992, and by his brother, John Maki.

Arthur is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor I. (Hautanen) Maki of Jaffrey and by his son Peter and his wife Cathy Maki of Jaffrey. He was lovingly known as ‘Papa’ to his 3 grandchildren, Mariah and Alyssia Maki of Jaffrey, and Pvt. Garrett Maki, serving overseas in the U.S. Army. He is also survived by his 2 sisters, Margaret Perry of Concord, NH and Ellen Emerson of Hollis, NH; his 2 brothers, William Maki of Winterhaven, FL, Walter Maki of Winchester, NH and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
