Bertha 'œBetty' Lane, 89, of Turnpike Road in Jaffrey died Friday, June 8, 2007 at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center in Jaffrey after a period of failing health.

Mrs. Lane was born in Pitman, New Jersey on February 9, 1918, daughter of the late Herschel and Sarah (Myers) Williams. She was a graduate of Pitman High School. Mrs. Lane had served with the U.S. Army Women'™s Army Corps from 1943 to 1945 and had attained the rank of Sergeant. Following World War II she was a recruiter for the United States Army for several years. She had been a resident of New Hampshire since 1953.

She had worked for Dr. Peter Jeffries in Peterborough for 10 years and continued to work at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough until she retired just 2 years ago at the age of 87. Mrs. Lane had been a member of the United Methodist Church in Peterborough for many years. She had formerly belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star in Peterborough

Mrs. Lane was affectionately known to many as 'œNana'. She was an avid reader and was a master at crossword puzzles. She had a warm place in her heart for dogs and as evidenced by her very late retirement, she'™ll be fondly remembered for rarely sitting still.

Mrs. Lane was predeceased by her granddaughter Jodi Grant in 1974, her grandson Craig Lane in 1989, her son-in-law John Grant in 1995, her brother Herschel Williams in 1995, and her step-son Roger Nixon in 2002.

She is survived by her daughter Roberta 'œBobbie' Grant of Jaffrey, her son Albion 'œSkip' Lane of Jaffrey, 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren, her sister Doris Mendenhall and her brother Norman Williams, both of Sewell, New Jersey, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Family and friends are warmly invited to calling hours which will be held on Wednesday June 13, 2007 from 1:00 PM to 3:00PM at the Cournoyer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 33 River Street, Jaffrey, NH.

A Memorial Services will immediately follow calling hours at 3:00PM in the funeral home chapel. Burial will take place later at Saint Patrick Cemetery in Jaffrey.
