August 27, 1918 — November 22, 2011

Charles A. S. Hatfield, 93, of Weare, NH, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 after finishing his daily N.Y. Times crossword puzzle. Mr. Hatfield, born on August 27, 1918 in New York City, was the son of Charles and Helen (Lusk) Hatfield. He was raised in Scarsdale, NY and graduated from Scarsdale High School, class of 1935. He was a junior member of the NY Athletic Club, ran track, and graduated from Yale in 1939. During World War II, Mr. Hatfield served in the U.S. Navy and later became a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. He attended law school in Minneapolis while his family was young. Before his retirement in 1970, Mr. Hatfield was Regional Group Sales Manager with the Travelers for more than thirty years. His career began in Hartford, continued to Los Angeles and to Minneapolis during the 1940’s then to Manhattan in the 1950’s. He and his wife, Constance, had a summer home in Bradford, NH that they regrettably sold. This served as an impetus to move and raise his family at Bartlett Farm in Deering, NH. He retired from the Manchester office then moved to Weare. Gardening was his passion. He loved classical music, challenging crossword puzzles, European travel and writing. In the winters on Panama City Beach, Florida, he enjoyed the sunsets. Mr. Hatfield was predeceased by his sister, Kathryn Kamke, and by his former wife, Constance Howell. He is survived by his five children, Patricia Richter and her husband Carl of Brunswick, Maine, Charles A. S. Hatfield of Melissa, Texas, Beatrice H. Corriveau and her husband Kevin of Peterborough, NH, John Hatfield of Irvine, California, and George Hatfield and his wife Maha, of Spring, Texas. His grandchildren include Garth Corriveau, Esq. of Manchester, NH, Alexandra Corriveau of New York City, Mycah, Ian, Marielle Hatfield of Texas, and Collin Hatfield of California.
