David R. Elder

November 14, 1926 — December 9, 2015

David R. Elder, 89, of Dublin passed away peacefully on December 9, 2015 at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Jaffrey.

He was the fifth child of twelve born to George and Thelma (Pope) Elder. He spent his childhood in West Medway, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Signalman 1st Class on various vessels from 1944 to 1946 in the pacific. From 1949 to 1958 he owned and operated the I.G.A. grocery store in Dublin. David started the first Boy Scout Troop (49) in Dublin in 1949 and served as Scoutmaster for 15 years. He was also a member of the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years. In 1958 he became the Dublin Postmaster and served that post until 1978 and then served as the Jaffrey Postmaster until his retirement in 1988.

After retiring from the Postal Service, he enjoyed working part-time at the Peterborough Granite Bank and then at Brookstone in Peterborough. He finished his "semi-retirement" as Cemetery Superintendent for the town of Dublin. David served as Selectman to the town of Dublin, Deacon of the Dublin Community Church and served as secretary-treasurer of the Jaffrey Lions Club for several years.

David is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Vera (Larson) Elder, his four sons, Barry and his wife Vira of Dublin, Robert and his wife Michelle of Hampstead, NH, Brian of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Dean and his wife Michelle of Candia, NH, a brother Stephen and two sisters, Jeanne
Chamberlain and Geneva Smith; four grandchildren, Consuelo, Tomas and his wife Sabrina, Gareth, Kieran and many nephews and nieces.

Following his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A private family memorial service will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
