Deryl Shakespeare Schoenberg

July 30, 1923 — July 15, 2009

Deryl Shakespeare Schoenberg, of Jaffrey Centre, died in the early morning hours of July 15th at the home of her daughter, Deborah, due to complications from emphysema.
Originally a citizen of Canada, Deryl was born on July 30, 1923 in Vancouver, British Columbia, moving at a young age to San Francisco where she met her friend for over eighty years, Jean Tsuchiya. Through Jean and her family, Deryl developed a lifelong interest in Japanese culture and art, which she applied to her own creative endeavors and surroundings.
She studied and practiced nursing in Los Angeles during World War II; there she met and married her husband, Irving Schoenberg, a film editor, who died in 1963. Deryl moved to St. Louis with her two daughters, Pamela and Deborah, where she continued as a supervising head nurse at major city hospitals. During her nursing career Deryl also worked with veterans and the elderly.
After her career in nursing, Deryl moved to Goleta, California and immersed herself in her great love of gardening. In 2006, she moved to her final home in Jaffrey; she lovingly referred to her cottage the Shakespeare Doll House. Her lasting legacy is the beautiful gardens she had installed around the cottage.
Her favorite charities included supporting Native American educational organizations and Paralyzed Veterans. Deryl urged her daughters to follow their passions - she took special pride in volunteering during various summers as a costume assistant for the Publick Theatre in Boston, where her daughter Deborah was an actor and executive director from 1982 through 2001.
Deryl is survived by her daughters, Pamela Compton of Escondido, California; Deborah Shakespeare Thurber of Jaffrey Centre; their husbands, James Compton and Steven Thurber; Pamelas two sons, Brian D. Compton and Patrick E. Compton; Brians wife Angel, daughter Cheyanne Pamela and son Aiden James; and Patricks wife Noriko and son Sean Takechi, all of whom reside in southern California.

There will be a memorial service for family and friends to be held at the Thurber family property in Jaffrey in mid-August. The specific date will be available after the 1st of August upon request.
