Doris Swanson

Doris Swanson, 87, of Youngsville, North Carolina, passed on peacefully on Saturday, November 13, 2021 after a period of declining health.

Doris was born September 13, 1934, in Boston, MA, a daughter of Carl Albert and Alma (Johansson) Swanson. She graduated from Roslindale High School in Boston, MA in 1952. Following high school Doris earned her nursing certificate from the Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA and her flight attendant certification from American Airlines In 1956. She married Carl Swanson in 1957 and they shared 64 beautiful years of marriage. Together they had lived in Newtown, CT, Holden MA, and Sharon, NH.

After raising their three children, Doris decided to join the workforce through Manpower. She became an administrator for a real estate agency, a law firm, and an insurance company.
She also attended both Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA and Keene State College in Keene, NH.

Doris had a true love for adventure, travelling to many places, and always having a desire to learn. She had a passion for the water, sailing, kayaking, and canoeing were some of her favorite hobbies. One of her yearly highlights was sailing on the windjammer, “The Angelique,” which she did for many years. Doris loved to travel with her husband Carl to Europe and to the Virgin Islands.

Doris was an avid camper, she would hike with her family and loved both downhill and cross-country skiing. She was generous with her time volunteering at the Gale Free Library and the Women’s Garden Club in Holden, MA. She was an active member of Old Sturbridge Village for several years. As a member of Immanuel Lutheran church, she participated in numerous projects that aided families in relocation.

She was a lover of the Arts, she sang in the choir and adored playing her piano and organ. She took several courses at the Worcester Center of Crafts and Learning, where she learned wood working, jewelry design, stained glass making, and painting. She was talented in many handiworks like knitting, quilting, embroidery, weaving, and crewel. Doris loved to work in her garden and was an was a reader and writer of several pieces of poetry.

Doris was predeceased by her parents Carl Albert and Alma Swanson.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Carl Swanson; her three children, Diane Junell and her Husband Bradley of Cary, NC, David Swanson of Bangkok, Thailand, and Kurt Swanson of Boston, MA; her grandchildren Victoria Junell of Durham, NC and Nathan Junell and his wife Mary of Raleigh, NC, and her great-grandchildren, Sterling and Atticus.

Doris’s family welcomes all family and friends to join them for a funeral service which will be held 11:00 AM at the Advent Lutheran Church, 137 US Route 202, Rindge, NH 03461 on 5/7/2022. Committal will take place after the service at North Cemetery on McCoy Road, Sharon, NH, 03458.
