Elizabeth Ann Commerford of Boston, MA died on January 19, 2022, in her home.

She was born on October 18, 1939, in Manchester, NH to William Alphonsus and Margueritte Yvonne (Bournival) Commerford. She spent her childhood in Manchester, N.H, and was a 1958 graduate of Ecole Sainte George High School for Girls. After high school, Elizabeth attended Smith College earning a bachelor’s degree. She also attended Simmons College for Social Work and graduated in 1968.

She worked as an Adult Psychiatric Social Worker at the Massachusetts Mental Health Hospital for most of her professional life. In addition, Betty was a skilled mediator, and fierce neighborhood advocate, working to create affordable housing for Mission Hill residents. Betty was one of the founders of the Gurney Street Affordable Housing Development, The Mission Hill Housing Services, as well as The Boston Self Help Center. In addition, Betty was an active member of her beloved Rindge, NH community. She was a member of the Rindge Crime Watch and Emerson Pond Improvement Association, where she held many positions. She was also a regular participant and contributor in town meetings and planning boards.

She found great pleasure in spending time at her New Hampshire cabin, going on adventures with friends, being with family, gardening, birdwatching, antiquing, reading, watching old movies, and rooting for the Patriots and Celtics.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, William and Marguerite (Bournival) Commerford, sister-in-law Kathleen (Herlihy) Commerford, and nephew Timothy Commerford.

She is survived by her brother William Commerford, and his wife, Katherine Fischer, nephew and niece Liam and Tara Commerford, great nephew, Ian Commerford and many extended family members in Manchester, NH.

Services will be held at a later date in the Spring/ Summer.
