Elizabeth Ann Cowan, 90, of Peterborough, NH died at home November 2nd, surrounded byher family.

She was born to the late Dr. Zalmon Omar and Della Gertrude Sherwood on November 21, 1918 in Alexandria, Louisiana. She graduated as class valedictorian from Geneva High School, Geneva, Ohio, and went on to receive a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and Nutrition from Flora Stone Mather College (Case Western Reserve University). She married the late Marshall James Cowan in 1942 and relocated many times, following Marshalls career, making lifelong friends everywhere they went. The couple retired to Homosassa, FL in 1980.

Elizabeth (Betty) was active throughout her life in the Episcopal Church. An avid game player, Betty was known for her Bridge skills and Scrabble expertise. She also loved to fish and usually managed to catch the biggest one. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed nothing more than entertaining her family and friends.

Betty is survived by her brother, Dr. Zalmon Omar Sherwood of Sarasota, FL, three children: Marshall James Cowan, Jr. of Tampa, FL; John Sherwood Cowan and wife Deborah of Morgan, VT; and Mary Elizabeth Stanek and husband John of Peterborough, NH; her six grandchildren: J. Aaron, Isaac, Jesse and Rachel Cowan; John Marshall Stanek and Katherine Flynn; and six great grandchildren: Gavin, Gabriella, Claire and Lilian Cowan; and Evan and Marshall Flynn, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Town of Peterborough to benefit senior programming at the new community center (at the Armory) c/o The Recreation Department, 64 Union St, Peterborough NH 03458 or Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services, Inc, P.O. Box 564, Keene, NH 03431.

An internment service was held in Homosassa, FL at The Fountains Cemetery.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held on Bettys birthday, November 21st, at 11 a.m. at the Monadnock Country Club in Peterborough, NH.
