Gladys W. Shea, 87, of Slip Road in Greenfield, NH died Sunday, April 12, 2009 at the home of her grandson in Antrim, NH after a brief illness.

She was born on July 7, 1921 in Rindge, NH, daughter of the late Harry S. and Maude (Pratt) Whitney.

She attended Rindge and Jaffrey schools, graduating in 1940 from Conant High School in Jaffrey.

She has been a resident of Greenfield since her marriage to Albert J. Shea in December 1944.

Mrs. Shea had formerly worked as a clerk for the United States Post Office in Greenfield, a secretary at the grain mill of E.C. W.L. Hopkins Inc.; later as a secretary at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center and for a brief time worked as a waitress at Greenfield Industries. Her last employment was for the Tripp family as a secretary at Pawprints Inc in Jaffrey.

Mrs. Shea was a member of the PTA of the Greenfield Elementary School; the secretary of the Greenfield Recreation Committee; an honorary member of the Monadnock Oldies Car Club, and was a member of the local ladies group called Stitch and Chatter

She is survived by her daughter Virginia Bingham and her husband David of Greenfield, NH; her son Frank H. Shea and his wife Sylvia of Greenfield, NH; three grandchildren, Michael Bingham and wife Erika of Antrim, NH, with whom Gladys had been staying, Anne Quesada and husband John of Williamsville, NY and Frank Shea of Durham, NH; four great-grandchildren, Kelly Bingham of West Hartford, CT, Kate Quesada of Williamsville, NY, Aidan and Malin Bingham, both of Antrim, NH.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1974 and her long time companion, Detroit Hood of Rindge in 2006.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Hospice at HCS, Post Office Box 496, Peterborough, NH 03458, or to Southern New Hampshire Services, Inc, for the Northern Peterborough Family Program, 41-3 Pheasant Road, Peterborough, NH 03458.

There will be no calling hours.

Graveside services will be held at the family lot in Greenvale Cemetery, Greenfield, NH on Friday April 17, 2009 at 2:00PM. Rev. Daniel Osgood, Pastor of the Greenfield Congregational Covenant Church will officiate.
