Harold G. Sands

Harold G. Sands, 85, of Dublin Road inJaffrey, died Sunday December 27, 2009 at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Jaffrey following a long and debilitating fight with Parkinsons disease.

He was born on August 6, 1924 in Jaffrey, son of the late Harold M. and M. Louise (Guy) Sands.He was a 1940 graduate of Conant High School in Jaffrey and in 1949 he graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Harold served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Stationed at Guam with the 43d Bombardment Squadron he was a radio operator and had flown missions over Japan. He received the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster for his involvement in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. He was a member of the John Humiston Post #11 American Legion of Jaffrey and also a member of Jaffrey Memorial Post # 5613 VFW.
Harold worked at W.W. Cross Company in Jaffrey from 1949 until his retirement in 1988 as Plant Engineer. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Following his retirement, he and his wife owned and operated Sandsridge Hydroponics Lettuce Gardens at their home for more than 12 years. He was a HAM Radio operator from 1988 until recently, using the call sign of KA1IAY.
Harold was an active member of the United Church of Jaffrey, UCC where he served as a deacon and had been Church Moderator, he had served on Pastoral Relations Committee, was active in the Couples Club, was Member at Large Emeritus for the United Church of Jaffrey at Cheshire County UCC as well as State UCC and always looked forward to attending the Annual Meetings. Church members often referred to him as the Church Historian. For many years he was active with Boy Scout Troop 33 in Jaffrey. He served as Scout Master and Troop Committee Chairman, for more than thirteen years.
He was a member of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, the NH Timber Owners Association and had taught Hunter Safety for several years.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Norma J. (McClelland) Sands of Jaffrey; two daughters Deborah S. Moore of North Andover, MA, and Ellen H. Sands of Beaver Creek Oregon; his son Robert M. Sands of Rindge; three grandchildren, Justin Z. Moore, Tyler C. Moore and Devon K. Moore all of North Andover, MA; nieces and nephews. His only sibling Philip H. Sands died in March of 2009.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the United Church of Jaffrey, 54 Main Street, Jaffrey NH 03452

Spring burial will be in the family lot in Conant Cemetery Jaffrey

As per his request, there will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday January 9, 2010 at 3:00PM at the United Church of Jaffrey, 54 Main Street, Jaffrey. Rev. Terri Motley pastor will officiate.
