Helen W. Mallery

Helen Whiting Mallery, 94, formerly of Jaffrey, died peacefully on Saturday April 23, 2011 in Concord, NH.

Helen was born in Brockton, Mass in 1916 to George and Hazel Whiting. She grew up in Brockton, Mass and went on to Gordon Theological Seminary in Boston. There she met Wesley Arthur Mallery. She spent a post graduate year at Andover Newton Seminary before marrying Wesley and moving to Connecticut while he finished Yale Seminary.

Their first church was in Peace Dale, R.I. where their children, Susannah and John Wesley were born. The family moved to Mansfield, Squantum and Winchester as Wesley served churches in those Massachusetts towns. Helen worked as a childrens librarian in Winchester to help put her children through University of Rochester and Yale. Sue became a nurse and John, an architect and builder.

Wesley and Helen went on to serve churches in Chatham, N.J. and Jaffrey Center, N.H. They retired in Jaffrey Center. The final chapters of Helens life were spent at Havenwood/Heritage Heights in Concord, NH.

Helen was an active ministers wife and talented in her own right as a seamstress and gardener. She tailored many of her own dresses and clothing for the family. Helen and Wesley enjoyed classical music, especially the opera. She loved birding, cooking and traveling as well. She had bigger and better gardens culminating in 1992 in Jaffrey Center with the flower gardens the year Wesley passed away.

In addition to her husband, Helen was also preceded in death by her daughter Susannah in 2010.

Helen is survived by her son, John and his wife Fran of Worcester, Vt. and Sues husband, Paul Rank of Cincinnati, Ohio. She leaves five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helens name to either the First Church in Jaffrey, 14 Laban Ainsworth Way, Jaffrey, NH 03452, or to the South Congregational Church, 27 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301

She will be buried next to her husband in the Old Burial Ground Cemetery, behind the historic town meetinghouse in Jaffrey Center.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 11:00 AM,at the First Church in Jaffrey, 14 Laban Ainsworth Way, in Jaffrey Center.
