Janet Oliveira Luongo, 65, of Peterborough, NH and Pine Knoll Shores, NC, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at her home in Peterborough with her family by her side.
She was born on February 11, 1949 in Melrose, MA, daughter of the late Robert D. and Jeane (Shimer) Heileman. She grew up in North Haven, CT, and Winchester, MA and graduated from Winchester High School in 1967. She earned a BA in Cultural Anthropology from New York University in 1971, and an MA in Cultural Anthropology from Boston University in 1974.
Janet worked for McLean Hospital in Belmont from 1979 to 1987, as a research assistant and systems analyst while earning an MBA in International Marketing from Northeastern University in 1986. She then went to work for Digital Equipment Corporation in 1987 as a marketing communications manager in the General International Area (GIA), and later returned to McLean Hospital in 1998, as Business Manager of McLean Ambulatory Treatment Center at Naukeag in Ashburnham, MA.
Janet was married to Albert J. Oliveira from 1972-82 and raised their son, Matthew A. Oliveira, in Halifax, Vermont, Winchester and Ashburnham, MA. In 1991, she co-founded Westminster-Ashburnham Value Education (WAVE, Inc.) an educational foundation which provided funding for many educational programs for all age groups in the two communities.
She was a hospice volunteer for D.V.N.A. in Fitchburg, MA, and a Friendly Visitor for the Lunenburg Senior Center. In North Carolina, she was an active member of Pet Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of Carteret. She worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Coastal Carolina on Responsible Pet Owner Clinics, and was involved in PAWS Dog Rescue, Adoption and Foster Program. She also volunteered for the North Carolina Coastal Federation, and the Monadnock Humane Society in West Swanzey, NH. She embraced the tenets of Buddhism, but did not belong to a particular sect.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Beth Speziale.
Janet is survived by her husband, whom she married in 1995, Edward W. Luongo of Peterborough, NH and Pine Knoll Shores, NC; her son, Matthew A. Oliveira of New Ipswich, NH, her daughter-in-law, Lori Oliveira, her beloved grandchildren Maya Daisy and Isaac River Oliveira, her brother, David C. Heileman, of Halifax, VT, her brother-in-law, John Speziale, of Billerica, MA, nieces and nephews Christopher and his wife, Laura Gale, Tim and Sara Speziale, Rob Heileman, Kassidi Heileman Ramirez, Melanie Olajos, and ﬁve grand-nephews and nieces, Thomas, William, Ava Rose, Tristan, and Ashlyn Olajos. She was also pre-deceased by her ﬁrst husband, Albert J. Oliveira, and leaves behind her beloved father-in-law Albert P. Oliveira, and his family.
At Janet’s request, there will be no calling hours or formal services at this time. Her family will gather to celebrate her life in the near future.
