Lisa Borning Wettig

June 7, 1965 — April 27, 2014

Lisa Renee Borning Wettig, 48, of Gilsum, NH, died on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, NH after a courageous year-long struggle against cancer. Lisa met this struggle with great courage and commitment as she did all of life's challenges. Lisa dedicated her life to her family, her Christian faith, and her community. She established and led programs for youth through Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, soccer, church Sunday school, and Vacation Bible School. Her ability for creating and leading youth activities was evident at a very young age having organized a neighborhood “Kiddy Club” when she was 9 years old for the younger preschoolers on the block. Her career as a clinical counselor, most recently doing psychiatric social work for Monadnock Family Services, enabled her to provide care and healing to the wider community. She also counseled for Easter Seals and Good News Counseling. Her Christian ties involved numerous churches including Gilsum Congregational Church, Hope Chapel in Swanzey, and Grace Evangelical Church in Spofford. Lisa also served as a temporary pastor for Gilsum Congregational Church when needed. Her culinary skills were well-known and appreciated, especially her baking which won her several awards for her pies. This skill was inherited from her mother's professional baking family. Lisa was born in Ithaca, NY, in the heart of the New York Finger Lakes, to parents, Alice and Carl Borning. At age 6 her family moved to Manlius, NY where she developed her talents through many activities, notably Girl Scouts where she earned First Class distinction. In 1983 Lisa graduated with honors from the highly-rated Fayetteville-Manlius High School and went on to study at Mount Holyoke College where she earned a BA in psychology and linguistics. She moved to Cincinnati where she married Donald Wettig in 1994 on a mountaintop in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. While being a mother and housewife, she also continued her education and earned her master’s degree in counseling from Cincinnati Bible Seminary. Lisa is survived by her children, Caleb (15), Heidi (12), Myles (10), Abigail (8); husband, Donald Wettig; parents, Carl and Alice Borning of Manlius, NY; sister, Trina Lea Borning (Rich) Gribble of Harrisburg, PA; aunts and cousins in Durango, CO, Endicott, NY, Choconut, PA, Las Vegas, NV, California, and Germany; and a nephew and a niece in Harrisburg PA. Lisa will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but her faith has brought her home. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Gilsum Congregational Church, 13 Main Street, Gilsum, NH. Funeral services will follow at 2:00PM in the church. Rev. James Berry, Pastor, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lisa's memory to the Gilsum Congregational Church, P.O. Box 86, Gilsum, NH 03448-0086 and ear-marked for the Wettig children.
