Phillip Walling

Phillip Walling, 85, of Fitzwilliam, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 9, 2018, in his
Sleep, after a period of failing health.

He was born in Elizabeth, NJ, on March 3, 1933, the son of Roland and Nancy (DeGennaro) Walling. He spent most of his youth in Hazlet, NJ, where he was scout master of Troop 92.

Phil graduated from Hazlet G.S. and Keyport H.S., and then went on to earn his BA from the University of Tampa and his Masters from Pepperdine University.

He went into the Air Force in 1953 during the Korean War and retired in 1980, He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded both the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal for his work with Project Baby Lift (the rescue of over 2,000 orphans from Vietnam.) He served in Project New Life, the resettling of refugees on Wake Island. He taught school at the Air University in Montgomery, AL from 1975 to 1980. After moving to Fitzwilliam, he worked in real estate for 26 years.

On June 17, 1967, he married Reuel (Larrabee) Beshears, in a ceremony at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL.

His civic contributions included having served as Director of the United Way on MacDill AFB, Tampa, F; member of the church vestry in Honolulu, Hawaii and Sunday school teacher at Kindley AFB, Bermuda.

ln his beloved Fitzwilliam, he served as the Village District Commissioner, Trustee of the Trust Funds, a co-author of the town history, on the 225th anniversary board, deacon of the Community Church, life member of the VFW and member of the Lion's Club.

Among his hobbies were golf, fly fishing, boating, gardening, watching baseball, football, and hockey, and his cottage on Laurel Lake.

He is survived by: his wife of 50 years, Reuel; his loving children of whom he was so proud: Phyllis Key of St Louis, MO, Lisa Almendares of Tampa, FL and Bain Walling of Knob Noster, MO., and their wonderful spouses. He loved and enjoyed his grandchildren:, Nicole, Darin, Leia, Daniel, Kelsey, Kendall and honorary granddaughter: Riley; two great-grandchildren: Lance Kee and Avalyn Key . He also leaves his sister, Peg Mangle of Avon Park, FL and his Missouri cousins.

There are no public calling hours. A Memorial service and gathering will be held later in the year when the weather is warm, the way Phil liked it best.
