Ruth E. (Smith) Ascani

February 13, 1929 — August 19, 2012

Ruth E. (Smith) Ascani, 83, of Jaffrey, died August 19, 2012 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH after a brief illness. She was born in New Boston, NH on February 13, 1929, daughter of George Ella Mae (Cluche) Smith. Ruth attended schools in Milford and Manchester and had worked for over 30 years with First National Stores specializing in the Deli. Ruth and her husband Romolo were very active and dedicated members of the Jaffrey Memorial VFW Post #5613, and the John Humiston American Legion Post #11 in Jaffrey. She would always donate Christmas decorations and decorate the VFW hall every year. Ruth enjoyed being outside gardening and watching all of the area songbirds. She also liked watching golf and cooking shows on TV and took many bus tours of New England with her traveling companion Sandy. Ruth loved going to her son and daughter’s country home attending the farmers market and seeing the many friends that loved her in Waitsfield Vermont. She was predeceased by her siblings Hazel Knutsen of California, Irene Smith of New Boston and her husband Romolo Ascani of Jaffrey. She is survived by her son David Carleton and his wife Joleen of Milford, NH, her brother George Smith, Jr. of Amherst, her sister Dorothy Falkowski of Nashua, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to be made to the Jaffrey Food Pantry, in care of Faye Cooke, Director, 303 Great Road, Jaffrey, NH 03452.

Friends and family are warmly invited to calling hours on Friday, August 24, 2012 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River Street, Jaffrey.

A graveside service will be held in the family lot at St. Patrick Cemetery, Hillcrest Road, Jaffrey at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 25, 2012. Rev. Robert Ritchie, Pastor of the Bennington Congregational Church, will be the officiant.
