Listen to Obituary

Alan Richard Toegel of Surry, NH, went home to be with His Lord and Savior on February 17th, 2026. He was surrounded by the care and love of his family.

Alan was born to Margaret (Williams) and Adolph Toegel in Somerville, New Jersey. He graduated from North Plainfield High School in 1955 and went on to serve in the US Army in Germany from 1958 - 1960.

He worked for AT&T for many years, starting as a lineman and then doing residential installation. He ended his career doing commercial installation including work as a PBX technician. He continued to do contract work for several area businesses until his wife didn’t want him climbing tall ladders anymore.

He met the love of his life during his early years while they were both working for AT&T in NJ and they were married in July of 1960. They had three children together; Stephen Alan, Daniel Richard, and Abigail Lynn.

Alan had a passion for serving God throughout his life. He would refer to his salvation as "the Lord turning the lights on." He took great joy in leading Bible studies and mentoring other Christians. In fact, there were very few church roles that he didn’t serve over the course of his life. In his final years, he was leading several Bible studies, greeting people as they came to church and also faithfully cleaned the church bathrooms every week. He read the entire Bible through every year for over 20 consecutive years.

Alan could talk to anyone. He called himself a “social butterfly”. His relationships with others would go deeper than superficial though. He would take the time to truly get to know people. He had the deepest care for others and would always let them know he was praying for them.

When surrounded by his loving family, he would often say, "I am the richest man in the world." Known as Papa to his grandchildren, he was known as Papa Two to his great-grandchildren.

Alan is survived by his sons, Stephen Toegel (Crystal) and Daniel Toegel (Martha); his grandaughters Danielle McBreairty (Andre), Stephanie Francis (Brad), and Anna Weigel; his great grandchildren Tessa McBreairty, Sam and Ellia Francis, and Ezra Weigle; and his sister Linda Jensen and brother Jack Hamshar and many beloved relatives and friends.

He is predeceased by his wife, Elaine, his daughter, Abigail, and his great-granddaughters, Addie and Tallie.

A memorial service for Alan will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Alan's name to Monadnock Covenant Church, 90 Base Hill Road, Keene, NH 03431.
