Doris M. Sherburne

August 9, 1936 — December 11, 2022

Doris Myrtle Sherburne, 86, of New Ipswich, NH passed away peacefully on December 11, 2022. She was born on August 9, 1936, in Tyngsboro, MA, a daughter to the late Maxwell and Bernice Sherburne. Doris grew up in Tyngsboro, MA and graduated from Lowell High School in 1954 with the highest grades in her class. After high school, she earned a bachelor’s degree at Wellesley College and then a master’s degree in Social Work from Simmons College.


She moved to Cambridge and worked helping children at the New England Home for Little Wanderers. She married Sigmund Hinlein and later moved to Sudbury, MA in 1963 to begin building her family with the births of her sons Erich and Peter. After a time, she reentered the workforce and spent many years facilitating housing for clients at the Solomon Mental Health Center in Lowell, MA. She moved to New Ipswich with her partner, Arthur Stansel, in 1980 and continued working at Solomon and then at the Seven Hills Foundation. Finally breaking away with a private group where she worked with clients into her 80s.


Doris was always very fond of going for walks, birding, and the outdoors. Recently, in her free time, she could often be found walking about New Ipswich. She will always be remembered for her patience and kindness. She is predeceased by her parents, Maxwell and Bernice Sherburne, her son, Peter Hinlein, sisters, Connie and Betty, and brother, Bob. Doris is survived by her son, Erich Hinlein of Pelham, MA, sisters, Lucy and Maxine, and a brother Alan. A memorial and separate graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Doris’s name to the Harris Center for Conservation Education, Hancock, NH.
